One way to evaluate prospects is by comparing them statistically against prior draft years. Typically, most people simply compare just points-per-game but that discounts the fact that different players score a different percentage of their points on the power play versus at even strength. I created what I call the NHL Projection formula (NHLP), which is a formula that takes a CHL player’s non-power play and power play stats in their first draft eligible year and projects what they will produce in their best NHL season. It also takes age into account, which I have found has an effect on only power play production. I have prorated the numbers over an 82 game season.
In Part II, we will look at the OHL forwards that project to have 40-50 point potential in their best NHL season. We will than look at the players that are the most statistically comparable from past draft years. I have gone back and applied the NHLP formula to over 500+ players since the 1998 draft so there is just a couple to choose from. The comparable players will have an:
- NHLP within +/- 2.5 %
- Height within +/- 1 inch
- For players 6’4+, the range of height for comparables will be any players over 6’2 due to lack of comparables.
- For players 5’9 and shorter it will be any player less than 5’10.
When comparing, I have broken the players into three categories:
- Players who played 100+ NHL Games
- Players who have played less than 100 NHL Games and who became first draft eligible in 2008 or before.
- Players drafted between 2009 and 2014 who have not yet reached 100 games. For these players it is too early to call which of the first two categories they will fall into in the future.

70% of the comparable players for Addison were taken in the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the draft and when looking only at the successful forwards with over 100+ NHL games, 6 of the 9 were taken between 44th and 72nd overall. In terms of comparables, Addison deserves consideration as a mid-second round to mid-third round choice. However, to warrant this high of a pick, Addison must demonstrate strong two-way play like the majority of the players with 100+ NHL games (Fisher, Tyrell, Kennedy, Campbell, Gordon, McClement).

Stephens is similar to Addison, in terms of size and offensive production, so due to this they have many of the same comparable players. Just like with Addison, a player should showcase strong two-way play and hockey sense to make up for having average offensive skills and being slightly below average size. While there has been a couple of 1st round choices (Lazar and Gordon), typically a player like Stephens will go mid-second round or third round.

To be 5’6 and drafted in the top 100 is an extremely rare accomplishment. With only one comparable in Felix Schutz, who was a 4th round pick, Palmu is not a player worth considering in the top 100. The likeliest scenario is that Palmu is passed over in the 2015 draft.

There are 9 comparables to have played over 100+ NHL games, with 8 of the 9 being 3rd round or later picks. Therefore, despite 1/3 of the picks being 1st or 2nd round picks, forwards of average size and stats tend not to turn out as wise early picks and you are better off waiting to see if the player slips to the 3rd round. In terms of stats and comparable players, Austin Wagner of the WHL is very similar with a NHLP of 44.29.

The most common choice for a player like Knott is to be taken in the first two rounds. With Tom Wilson and Brent Burns being the only picks in the first two rounds to play over 100+ NHL games, it appears once again teams are overvaluing size and hoping a player is a late bloomer in terms of offensive skill. In most cases, a team would be better served waiting till at least the late 2nd round, if not the 3rd round for a big player with average skill.

13 of the 15 comparables for Cirelli were taken in the 3rd round or later, so that is a good starting point to use for Cirelli. In the WHL, Kolesar has a similar NHLP of 41.81 and similar comparables but the big difference is Kolesar has 50 lbs in weight on Cirelli and is the more attractive prospect. With his slight frame and the fact that all the players who played 100+ NHL games were 4th round or later picks, it suggest Cirelli should also be taken with at most a 4th round pick.

There are 8 comparable players taken as a top 100 pick between 1998 and 2008 and they all failed to reach 100 NHL games. A player like Tierney may change that, being a late 2nd round pick, but it’s hard to justify more than a 3rd round pick on players like Fox. However, best value for this type of player is to wait till the 4th round and use your 3rd round pick on another player with higher upside.

McCool has comparables that range from a 1st round pick (Eager) to a couple of players passed over in their first eligible draft years (Jeffery and Nolan). Using a first round pick on a player with at best 3rd line upside and more likely 4th line seems crazy to me. Like with Fox, I would pass over using a 2nd round pick and would only consider using a 3rd or later on McCool, with a 4th rounder being of best value.
CONCLUSION
While there is a lot of top end talent in the OHL, they are lacking for depth role players that fall with a NHLP in the 40-50 point range in comparison to the WHL (OHL:8, WHL: 14). Out of these eight OHL forwards, we can rule out Palmu as not having enough offensive production for a 5’6 player and he will need a breakout season next year to be drafted. Cirelli is a player that does warrant a draft pick but as far as my top 100, his lack of offensive production for a 160lb player scares me off at the moment. McCool and Fox have the size but their lack of offensive production makes me believe a 4th round or later pick would be better used in such a deep draft year.
That leaves four players that have the stats and comparable players to warrant consideration as a top 100 pick. Knott has size and some offensive skill and will likely go higher than I rank him as I currently value him as a 3rd round pick. Senyshyn is another player currently worth a look in the third round but he could move up or down based on what the draft guides have to say. Addison both project to be worth a mid-2nd round to mid-3rd round pick, if the scouting reports have positive things to say about their all-around game. If not than a 4th round or later pick would best be used.
After looking at the players that project to have 40+ point potential for their best NHL season I have narrowed them down to these thirteen players as worth considering for my top 100 (the NHLP has been updated with the stats from the Erie/Oshawa series):
